Churachandpur (Churāchāndpur)
Churachandpur is the district name of the Churachandpur District in the Indian state of Manipur. It is named after the Meitei King Churachand Singh, the Maharaja of Manipur Kingdom.
It must be clearly noted that Churachandpur is not the name of a place or locality. It is only the name of a district in Manipur. Not to be confused with Lamka Town which is the District headquarter of Churachandpur.
Churachandpur is part of the Outer Manipur Lok Sabha constituency. It encompasses a large number of Towns, Suburbs and Villages, variety of ethnic groups, mainly around the town Lamka and Tuibuong. There are various tribes living there namely Paite, Thadou-Kuki, Vaiphei, Zou, Hmar, Simte, Gangte, Lushai/Lushei/Mizo, and many more. Locally, Paite Dialect is commonly spoken in Lamka area whereas in the Tuibuong area, Thadou Dialect is mainly spoken. Hence, there is no common official language in this Town, tribes there seldom speak nor understand Meitei or Manipuri as well. The ethnic tribes are following Christianity in religion. Though varied in many ways, they are unified by their common ancestry, sharing common names, history, culture and traditions and share a lot of similarities in their dialects as well.
